TASK
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- This is to use shape, texture, and color to create contrast and harmony
- Create at least two silhouettes of a piece of technology that has developed and changed through time. The silhouettes are created by manipulating to the proper size copyright-free images using Adobe Illustrator. These silhouettes are to be placed on a collage background of tissue paper. The collaged tissue paper should include a particular color and its compliment so that it reveals numerous hues and values.
- Once the collage is complete, create a color inventory of the piece. Divide the piece into 1"x1" squares and take a tally of the five to seven colors on the page. Once the colors have been tallied, arrange them on Illustrator into bars of color proportionate to the collage.
- The world's technology changes rapidly and with such advances so too does our dependency on that technology. This is no truer than in the realm of electronic technology. In the last one hundred year electronic technology has progressed and proliferated to levels unimagined in 1879 when Thomas Edison revealed his incandescent lamp. Countless benefits have come from our use of technology, but these benefits are not without their cost. With a rapid change in society's use of technology has also come changes in our social, physical, and even moral behavior. We don't talk to a friend face to face. We Snapchat them. We no longer daydream out the window. We glare into a screen. We no longer walk or ride our bikes to a school. We drive. We no longer seek out doctors, parents, and priests for advice. We just google it. While many changes that have come from technology have been good, not all of them are.
- A well designed work of art can subtly influence a viewer's opinion on a particular topic. Not only in this project are you to create at least two silhouettes of technology, you must create and place them in such a way that they suggest how you feel and what you think about the particular pieces of technology at hand.
- White cardstock paper
- colored tissue paper
- glue and brush
- scissors, X-acto
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Adobe Illustrator
- Glueing with solution
- X-acto blade use
- Materials that are difficult to cut (e.g., cardstock) require a clean blade and a strong, guided hand
- Follow all safety and precision instructions regarding the x-acto blade
- When gluing tissue paper use a quarter size of glue and approx. 2 tablespoons of water. If the ratio is too watery the paper will not stick.
- Bleeding tissue paper is acceptable, though it may not be desirable for the artist. Some colors (reds, dark blues) tend to run more easily than others.
- A form is best defined by its major contour lines and/or its unique contour lines. Pay attention to the strongest contour lines first, then, if necessary, focus on the unique lines. For example, it is more important to capture the heel and toe of a shoe than its types of shoe laces. The heel and toe give the object its form. The shoelaces are an accent.
- Where are the two (or more) objects on the page? Where are they in relationship to one another? Slight adjustments to these two questions can be the difference between a confused project and a cohesive one.
