PROCESS TIPS
- This is to use line and space to create movement
- Create a work of art that consists of six 5x5 squares. The squares will be a dark color. Each panel should have one to six lines without repeating the same number. The lines will all be white and should be arranged in such a way that they are demonstrate unity and directional movement.
- Before you begin to do this project just to get it done, draft up a few different ideas of what you might like to create.
- This design cannot represent anything (nonrepresentational work). That is, it cannot look like something (e.g., a tree, the arch, a brand or logo). If it happens to look like something, then it can only be because the viewer sees something, not because you wanted it to look like something.
BACKGROUND
- Great works of art control a viewer's eyes without him even noticing it. Artists intentionally direct a viewer's eyes through a series of visual steps so that after even a brief glance the viewer will have traveled through the whole art piece. Depending on what message the artist is trying to convey, he might have the viewer's eyes move in circles throughout the piece, focus on one particular spot, or wander completely off the page.
- Different style of lines convey different emotions in the viewer. An artist will use particular lines in his piece in order to subtly influence the viewer. For example, to create a relaxed, calm piece an artist might make a series of horizontal serpentine lines that look like calm waves. To create an excited, dynamic piece he might create a series of many skinny, sharp, diagonal rectilinear lines that run off the page.
