TASK
- Let's look at the underlying structures of famous works of art so as to understand why those pieces are so successful
- Reproduce a famous work of art using the pen, shape, and eyedropper tools on Adobe Illustrator.
- Trace a contour drawing of the work of art that captures the most prominent planes, lines, and movement in the piece.
- Complete the design inventory worksheet that explores the design elements and principals of the work of art.
- Most of us know the names of at least a few famous artist and their works of art. Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, Picasso's "Guernica," and Van Gogh's "Starry Night" to name just a few. While many people know the names and artists of a few works of art, fewer people understand why famous works of art are so successful. A work of art does not become famous just because it "looks cool." Great works of art possess many subtle layers of profound social, spiritual, and cultural significance. These works of art possess such layers because of the artist's strong intentional attention to the artwork's design elements and principles. By studying the basic design elements and principles within any work of art the viewer will be able to better understand a famous artwork's importance.
- Great art did not begin and end during the Italian Renaissance. Every generation and continent has produced its own artistic masters. This project seeks to introduce each student to artists that they might have heard of before but never studied.
- Adobe Illustrator
- pencil and paper
- When using Illustrator, always create big shapes first and then layer smaller shapes on top of them. Go from big to small.
- When using Illustrator, always select multiple sections of an object with the eyedropper tool in order to capture both the correct color and value. The proper color without the proper value will look off. The same is true with the correct value but wrong color.
- When using the pen tool to trace a shape, remove the color from the fill and line so as to see your path more easily.
